A Fond Farewell to The Office

The Office had its final cold open a few weeks ago and it took us awhile to collect our thoughts about the finale and the show and everything we’ve loved about the Dunder Mifflin Paper Company.

I credit The Office for being the show that really got me addicted to TV.  It was the first show that I binge watched.  It was the first show that I bought on iTunes.  It was even the first show that kept me up at night, watching ‘shipper videos on youtube.  I was a fan of Steve Carell from Anchorman and Bruce Almighty, but hadn’t really seen all that much of him since I didn’t watch The Daily Show.  I remembered the British Office winning Best Comedy at the Golden Globes, but hadn’t seen it.  Therefore, when the pilot came and went with lukewarm reviews, I didn’t even bother trying to tune in.  Then, at the end of season 2, a friend of mine made me sit down and watch an entire episode.  The moment I saw Dwight on that exercise ball, I was hooked.  Hooked in a way that I had never been with a show.  I bought the DVDs as soon as possible and talked it up constantly to everyone I knew.  When Steven and I first started dating, we watched the first two seasons in a marathon all-night session in December while making Christmas presents for our families.  It was the first of many, many TV marathons in our relationship.  I honestly wonder if our relationship would’ve made it to 2008 if he hadn’t loved the show instantly like I did.  It was also the show that convinced Steven that TV wasn’t the wasteland he remembered (or pretentiously pretended to remember).  Though it faded fast in the later seasons, it never left our DVR schedule and we proudly bought each season on DVD as soon as it came out.

So thank you Greg Daniels, Mike Schur, Steve Carell, Rainn Wilson, John Krasinski, Jenna Fischer, Mindy Kaling, BJ Novak and all you other crazy kids for putting together this insane show about chaos and comedy and heart in a paper company.  You were the beginning of this beautiful addiction.
